Portion Control Handout

Portion Control Guide Image

This handout simplifies portion control by showing you how to use your own hand as a guide. It also differentiates between men and women. Generally (not always), men can eat larger portions depending on their frame size and percent of lean mass.

Regardless of gender, there are many other factors to consider such as activity level, type of work (office vs labour job), everyday lifestyle (standing vs sitting), and so forth.

The more active you are in everyday living, the more calories you will need. This means you will need to adjust portions to meet those demands. You should know your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) so you can better adjust your personalized portions.

However, if you don’t have this information, you can use this guide by making adjustments at the end of each week. For example, if you are trying to lose weight you can slightly reduce portions a little bit at a time until you get the scales to move. It’s just another tool in your toolbox.
