Riverport Osprey 5k Practice Run

Riverport, NS

Very positive bunch of runners & walkers!
Looking out the window this morning and seeing the beautiful fog gently hug my picturesque community of Riverport, NS, I soon became very excited to do our practice run-walk for the 7th Annual Riverport Osprey 5k Run-Walk. The event is taking place this Saturday, May 11th, and is a combined fundraiser for the Riverport Community Centre (80%) and PRO Kids (20%). I will be setting up a booth at the event to take further donations for my PRO Kids fundraiser, a task that I took on to enter EPIC Dartmouth and help raise money and awareness for the local organization in need. PRO Kids (Positive Recreation Opportunities) provides funds for economically challenged youth in Lunenburg County so they can participate in sports, recreation and culture. PRO Kids connects to me on a deep level as growing up my parents did not have the money to put me in the activities I desired. PRO Kids supports not just sports but music lessons, art lessons, and more. It’s such a fantastic idea! The sad thing is every year they run out of money. Last year I raised almost $5000 and this year, while I don’t think I’ll be able to match that amount, I aim to raise another $1200. The Riverport Osprey committee approached me and kindly asked if they could help out by donating 20% of their proceeds to my fundraiser. I was thrilled, honoured, and so proud to have this happen in my own community.
So this morning, in my GO! fitness class, in which many of the participants are signed up for the Osprey 5k, we decided to have a practice run of the route. I also invited anyone else doing the event to join us and it pleased me to see several others come join us. We met at the Riverport Community Centre, like we always do every Wednesday morning for my fitness class, and it was only a few minutes after 9am that we began. There were a variety of fitness levels – some ran the whole distance, others did the walk-run method, and then there were those who walked the whole route (including me). I couldn’t help but snap a quick video and some pictures along the way. Those of you who can’t make the event or are doing it for the first time but missed this morning’s practice, you can now take a quick peak at the route on this blog. It’s breathtaking. Enjoy!
